Western North Delegation Advocates for a Public University

On Monday, 3 August 2026, Hon. Kofi Benteh Afful, Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso Constituency, joined a delegation from the Western North Region to engage the Committee on the Establishment of New Public Universities. The committee was inaugurated by the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and is responsible for developing recommendations concerning the establishment of new public universities across the country for presentation to Parliament.

Presenting the Case for Western North

The delegation’s presentation focused on the urgent need to establish a public university in the Western North Region. A public university would expand access to quality higher education, support local development and create greater academic and professional opportunities for young people across the region. The engagement allowed the delegation to explain the region’s educational needs and demonstrate how a university could contribute to skills development, research, innovation and economic growth.

Committee and Delegation

The committee was chaired by Dr. Mrs. Christiana Amoako-Nuamah, a former Minister of Education, and supported by a distinguished team committed to carrying out the national assignment. The Western North Region delegation was led by Prof. Emmanuel Carsamer. It included traditional leaders, professionals and other key stakeholders from across the region. Other distinguished individuals also joined the engagement virtually and contributed to the presentation in support of the region’s submission.

A United Regional Position

The participation of traditional leaders, professionals and other stakeholders demonstrated a united regional commitment to the establishment of a public university. The proposal is not simply a regional aspiration. It reflects a genuine need to improve access to higher education and create opportunities for present and future generations. Hon. Kofi Benteh Afful and the delegation remain focused and determined to continue advocating for the proposal as it moves through the appropriate national processes. The Western North Region remains hopeful that the vision of establishing a public university will become a reality.
